Introduction
The abundance of coconuts in the subtropical countries have provided impetus to Coir production. Coconut fibre provides the raw material for this age old industry.
India accounts for 90% of world coir exports to as many as 98 countries worldwide. Coir products are visible in the mature markets of America and the European Union. Coir has been starting to make inroads in new markets such as Asia, Australia, Japan, the Pacific Rim and in the emerging markets like Africa.
South Africa has been a growing market for India’s coir exports. Its growth has been steadily increasing. From a total quantity of 747 metric tons in 2001-2, it has increased to 1269 metric tons in 2006/7. |
The Eco-Friendly Solutions that stem from Coir can be broadly divided into three categories:
|
- coir geotextiles
- coco-logs
- coir ply
- coir rugs
Coir geotextiles protect land surface and promote quick vegetation. Geotextiles are a wonderful treasure of natural eco friendly, erosion control blankets in woven and non-woven preparations.
