As our name “Coir Institute” implies, we are a body dedicated to educating Southern Africa, and eventually the African continent, about coir. We are committed to the value and benefits of Coir, an eco-friendly solution to countless challenges.
The coir industry has been around for centuries, but its benefits have not been widely promoted, let alone tried and tested on the African contenant. Coir is India’s ‘best kept secret’ and the coir institute plans to introduce this environmentally friendly product to new markets, creating sustainability and economic opportunities. This is the coir institute’s driving ambition. Along with educating industry, agriculture and the private sector to coir’s benefits as an eco-friendly solution that resolves challenges such as erosion, coastal defense, revegetation, stabilisation and more; coir products have also made huge steps in solving real life challenges such as providing a solution to housing needs. It’s in this last category where research is being conducted on the possibilities around a product called CoirPly, an alternative to wood that will assist to reduce global deforestation.
The Coir Institute spearheads this informative drive into the African region with the support and co-operation of the Coir Board of India. The Coir Institute is also a member of SALI (South African Landscape Institute) and is in the process of establishing links with various international environmental bodies that also strive to deliver a ‘green’ solution, resolving the challenges facing the planet. Along with educating countries and communities, the Coir Institute assists in the installation of specific solutions by advising on correct installation procedures and offering the necessary support.
